A recent blog post by PC World’s David Coursey referenced the reliability issues inherent in cloud computing, particularly with backed-up data. His comments were prompted by the Google outage that left 14% of its user base without access to their data. Google said the outage came down to a simple traffic jam at an Asian data center. Whatever the reason, this experience should be a lesson for all of us. The cloud is not as reliable as advertisers would have us believe, especially for critical data. But it sure sounds good. What did our mothers warn us about? When something seems “too good to be true…”
There are weaknesses in backing up to the cloud (outages, slow backups and restores, no DR solution, expensive monthly/annual subscriptions). Most IT managers are reluctant to give up control and possession of their companies’ data by pushing it into the cloud. But those IT managers still using legacy tape backup (with poor performance and frequent failures) are looking for a better solution. Cloud backup is not it. To move your data protection from tape backup to cloud backup is trading one set of problems for new problems.
